About Abdullah
Abdullah Munish develops and runs wheelchair services and supportive seating in Tanzania as well as coordinating a national wheelchair taskforce. The service that Abdullah manages is currently able to support an average of 10 to 15 children per month, but is aiming this year to be supporting an average of 25 children per month. A large focus of his role is training other people from within and outside Tanzania to work with children with physical disabilities and to provide them with the postural support they need to function.
Supportive seating for children
Supportive seating is vital for children with complex disabilities who need an individually fitted wheelchair in order to participate in daily life. Children who are unable to sit without support are at high risk of developing deformities caused by imbalance of muscle tone and their inability to move independently out of poor positions. This leads to severe pain, structural changes in the hip and spine, and breathing and digestive difficulties and vulnerability to fatal infections. The inability for a child to sit also impacts on other developmental goals. It is estimated that 98% of children with disabilities in developing countries don't attend school. With a modified wheelchair a stable supported sitting position enables the person to interact with the world and people around them.
People with Faces
A contribution of £360 per month towards Abdullah’s role would enable his seating service to directly reach between 15-25 children each month. It would also support him to conduct training to seating services in other locations in Tanzania, thereby reaching more disabled children who need wheelchairs across the country. We are looking to raise enough to support Abdullah for four months by raising £1,440. This would mean 60-100 children being prescribed and fitted with supportive seating.
